Simon Ling at Greengrassi is a staggering show.

Minor domestic hinterlands of part-processed wood piles, recycling bins and garden centre plants left to go leggy. It’s Nature of course, but it is a particularly cultivated version. The pictures are enormous, overbearing even. They are made in 16 roughly equally sized rectangular zones within each canvas. And each zone is painted from studied observation. The images are not tidily fractured into a regimented system for looking, instead some 16th sections are painted together as 8th sections, and each zone is defined independently of the rest - the canvases are not gridded. Some zones are re-painted on top and bear the consequence of the decision that the first attempt was insufficient.

The colours are wet and heavy with thick air. They are great to be up close with, navigating through like a beetle whose process is urgent, familiar and driven by the need to food. Eyes crawl through these paintings on that same way. It’s a great way to look at pictures. There’s lots to learn about looking here.
